Three bends to town

Three bends in the road and you are in the coastal township of Whakatane (6.5km away) - a district rich in Maori history (one of the first Maori canoes landed here). Also close to Ohope Beach where the godwits migrate and the dotterels nest in the sand dunes, undisturbed by swimmers and surf. Golf clubs are nearby at Whakatane and Ohope.

Volcano

We recommend a visit to White Island, an active volcano 50km offshore, accessible by boat or helicopter. Or you can go swimming with the dolphins or relax in the Awakeri Hot Springs.

Directions

From Whakatane River bridge (at end of Landing Road):

• Take State Highway 30 (towards Rotorua)
• After 3.7km, turn right on sweeping bend onto Thornton Road (towards Tauranga)
• Travel 2.4km to the Red Barn (Leaburn Farm Homestay)
